The Beautiful City of L'vov

I was inspired to paint by the great artists of the City of L'vov in Ukraine. It was 1984, when I started studying Medicine at L'vov National Medical University. On my way to the tram halt from the University, there was an art gallery along this road. I used to stop and admire the beautiful fine arts of the gallery. I never saw similar arts anywhere yet. They were very unique to the City of L'vov. I later started painting on my own without any art education as such ( not even from school ). I wanted just to paint and enjoy them. That was the beginning of my fine art interest.........

This is me in my hostel room (1985-86) in L'vov, Ukraine, where I made my first attempts to paint.

Il Castello Bianco in building....

The only photo available during the painting. A 5 day, 10 hours per day effort to finish this large painting. A beautiful italian landscape which I wanted to finish and enjoy as quickly as possible. I added my own imaginations (including the castle) to this painting. My love for green color is reflected here. Actually, balancing the greens is the biggest headache for the artists as it does not harmonise with many colors. No difference to me.

In small paintings like this one, it is difficult to make fine details due to the size. Abstraction comes naturally.

The Night Kiosk

This is a 'night' study to try and balance the moon light, street light and the colored lights.

In memory of L'vov...

This was one of my mental images of night time L'vov. Some times I returned to the hostel late night after doing 'dishoorni' (student duty work) in hospitals. The winter cold was killing at this time of the night.

"The Shade of Willows" - A French Impressionist Style painting

The inspiration came to me from the great French Impressionists, who used colors only (without black and white) to express the feeling of the landscapes. The tradition was further carried by American artists like Henry Hensche at Cape School of Art in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
The 'light & color' method of seeing the world is the main idea behind this painting.

This is totally a palette knife painting with mainly unmixed or minimally mixed colors to maintain their vibrancy.

I was reluctant to make a sunset painting for a long time for some reason. I think it was because there are no cool colors (especially 'green') in it. The warm colors are not soothing to me. But sunsets make a different mood and almost all the artists have done at least one. I do not want to say I haven't done yet.

So here it is... the "Sunset Beach", at last.
